Gua Sha - Does It Really Work?

You may have seen Gua Sha tools pop-up in health food stores and on beauty blogs. Heralded to have the effect of a ‘natural face-lift’, there are big claims for this simple tool. Here’s everything you need to know about Gua Sha:

Gua Sha; an ancient technique used alongside Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), to relieve muscle tension and for massage. Traditionally, it was used to increase blood flow and lymphatic drainage. It was also believed to help move the flow of energy throughout the body.

The tool used in Gua Sha is a flat angled piece of crystal (similar to a crystal roller). Although commonly applied by ‘scraping’ the face to improve circulation, the Gua Sha tool was traditionally used anywhere on the body.

Does Gua Sha really work?

Although the evidence is limited for the long term benefits of Gua Sha, research shows promising short-term benefits for reducing chronic neck pain. A randomised controlled trial was conducted in Germany. Participants in the group who used Gua Sha for managing symptomatic pain, had a significant reduction in neck pain, compared to those who were treated with a thermal heat pad.

Another study which analysed the effectiveness of Gua Sha, showed benefits for improving micro-circulation of the skin. As well as the health benefit, it is a soothing ritual that can be incorporated into your self care routine!

Benefits of Gua Sha:

  • Relieves back pain

  • Supports lymphatic drainage

  • Reduces muscle tension

  • Reduces puffiness on the face

  • Can help to reduce fine lines and wrinkles

How often should I use Gua Sha?

It is recommended to use once a week, however this may vary depending on your skin type. Once your skin gets used to it, it can be used between 1-3 times per week.

Does it cause bruising?

The first time I used Gua Sha, I found myself noticing small ‘bruised’ capillaries on my face the next day. This lead me to look into the cause. Experts say this may be a common side effect after the first use, advising to be gentle when using the tool. To get results, you don’t need to put too much pressure on your skin. Gentle sweeps of the Gua Sha tool are enough to get your circulation going. If you are prone to small broken capillaries, it is recommended to avoid using this technique.

How to do a Gua Sha Facial Massage:

  1. Apply a nourishing, organic facial oil to your face (I recommend reship oil).

  2. Use the guide below to gently sweep your Gua Sha tool in an upward motion. Ensure you are holding it on an angle, and repeat each motion up to 5 times.

*Tip - store your Gua Sha crystal in the fridge for a cooling massage.
