Oat Milk - Everything You Need to Know.
You may have seen it on the shelves of your local health food store or supermarket along side almond milk, rice milk and soy milk. Oat Milk is the new plant-based milk on the block.
Here is everything you need to know about Oat Milk:
What is Oat Milk?
Oat Milk is a plant-based milk alternative, commonly made from water, oats and a pinch of sea salt. It is made using a similar process to nut milk by blending soaked oats in water and straining out the liquid.
Is it healthy?
Oat Milk may be a trend, although it does come with a number of health benefits! Oat Milk is suitable for vegans or those with dietary restrictions who are avoiding dairy products. It is also a source of B Vitamins and fibre.
Regular steel-cut oats are an excellent source of fibre, however, unfortunately some of the fibre content is lost during the straining process. Most oat milks contain about 2 grams of fibre per cup. This is definitely a perk, as it does contain more fibre than other plant-based milks, including almond milk. Compared to almond milk, oat milk is higher in carbohydrates and calories per serving.
Which brand should I choose?
Choose an oat milk brand that is preferably, certified organic and only containing; water, oats and sea salt. Unwanted oils, sugar and gums may be present, particularly in ‘Barista Blends’.
What does it taste like?
Unlike nut milks, oat milk doesn’t have a nutty flavour. It has a similar taste to cows milk, and all in all tastes ‘oat-y’! You’ll have to try it for yourself, but that’s my take on it.
What can I use it for?
Due to its creamy texture, oat milk can be great for using in coffees, baking, soups, stews and as a thickener.
The Final Verdict:
Oat Milk is suitable as a vegan or dairy free milk alternative
Not suitable for coeliacs, due to not being entirely gluten-free
