5 Minutes With Canna Campbell

Canna Campbell is the director of SASS Financial Services, Channel 9’s Financial Commentator, Founder of SugarMamma.TV, Author of the $1000 Project and Mum to Rocco.

I have been following Canna’s Youtube channel for years, and felt so inspired by her practical tips to create financial harmony, freedom and independence.

I chatted with Canna about all things from her typical day on a plate, inspiration behind creating the $1000 Project, advice for eating healthy on a budget and tips for career-driven and entrepreneurial women.

  1. What is your typical day on a plate?

No two days are the same, but  my routine is the same. On Mondays I start my week with an ocean swim and get to work early. I do intermittent fasting, and a day on a plate usually includes to following foods; fruit and veggies, salad, hummus with crackers, sushi or chopped veggies for lunch. In the evenings, I’m a little more relaxed as I’ve made a conscious effort to eat well throughout the day so I don’t feel as guilty towards the end of the day. Dinner can include homemade spaghetti Bolognese, stir-fry or salad.

2. What inspired you to create the $1000 project?

I wanted to prove that just because you’re earning a certain amount of money, doesn’t mean you can afford not to invest. There are a number of ways you can add additional income. This can include babysittng, starting a small business as a side hustle or doing market research surveys. I was also inspired to create the $1000 project to educate people around passive income.

3. What’s your best advice to people who are on a budget but want to eat healthy?

·     Create a food plan.

·     Make time to meal prep at the start of the week.

·     Check your pantry and fridge before going to supermarket to avoid doubling up on food.

·     Use your freezer as a time capsule.

·     Look for specials in catalogues, and plan your meals around this.

·     If you’re feeling stuck, look to social media for inspiration. There’s an abundance of free healthy recipes online.

4. What is your number one tip for busy women who want to live a healthy lifestyle?

The key is to get up early. In the morning there are no distractions and you can have time purely for yourself to set your intentions for the day. Today I’ve been up since 4:30am. This helps me to get the most out of the day and have time to meditate, take the dogs for a walk, spend time with my son and partner. Getting to sleep early is important for me as I need my sleep! I don’t watch TV and usually get to bed by 8:30-9:00pm. Sometimes I get tired in the late afternoon, but I’ve found that eating healthy foods and taking care of myself helps. Staying organised and choosing to eat healthy foods stops me from cheating or ordering uber eats, and I avoid eating out or going to restaurants.

5. What is your best advice for entrepreneurs or working women who struggle with time management?

Having a list of things to do is important for staying on top of everything and managing your time. Every Sunday I look at the week ahead and plan out when to fit in gym sessions and other activities throughout the week. During the working week, I limit socialisation as my schedule is quite tight. Evenings and weekends are for quality family time.

It’s important to be kind to yourself, always listen to body and honour that. I leave time in my schedule for one thing that could go wrong each day that will eat up half an hour of my time and allow for the reality of life to kick in. Allow for life to play its course.

6. How do you keep up the motivation to live with such a tight schedule?

My passion comes from giving, this comes naturally. During new year, as most people do I started feeling a bit flat, tired and unmotivated. To stay motivated, I focus on little things to build up momentum. I’ll listen to a motivational talk on youtube to break through or go back and focus on my goals. I remember my ‘why’, the reason why I’m doing it and what is it that I want to achieve, then refocus and adjust those goals.
