MY STORY
Over the years I've seen many doctors and dieticians for food intolerances and for a number of years just put up with a painful stomach as well as other results of my eating habits. At the age of 5 my mum took me to the doctor for constantly crying and complaining of stomach aches. The doctor dismissed me and said I was crying for attention and that there was nothing wrong with me.. little did we discover years later after seeing a number of specialists that there was an underlying issue, and I was eventually diagnosed with IBS.
I understand how hard it can be to follow a strict diet to meet the needs of your body, at one stage I was on an elimination diet only eating lettuce, pears and chicken! It can be hard to find healthy alternatives when you are out or eating socially and I believe that we should try to make healthy choices whenever possible. However, it's important not to beat yourself up if you have an indulgent moment or two! No one is perfect, health is a journey not a destination.
I've realised that when I fill my body with empty carbs, junk and processed foods I feel sluggish and crappy! When I eat foods closest to their natural state, home-grown vegetables and foods rich in nutrients I feel on top of the world and am full of energy! I really do think it’s as simple as that.
Listening to our bodies and considering how we feel after eating different foods is the best way to learn what works for you and what doesn’t!
Since I've started to listen to my body and notice how it reacts when I eat certain foods, I feel better in so many ways! My moods have changed, my skin has become clear and I no longer have stomach pains or bloating. I still have days where I crave chocolate and sugar (I’m not going to lie, I love chocolate) but now that I've created healthier recipes and alternatives it's much easier to satisfy my chocolate cravings without upsetting my body.
After experiencing gastrointestinal symptoms for as long as I can remember, being diagnosed with IBS/food intolerances and PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome), I developed a passion for nutrition and learning about how the foods we eat affect our bodies. This lead me to complete a Health Coaching course. Following this, I wanted to gain a deeper understanding, and after 3.5 years at university I completed a Bachelor of Health Science (Nutritional Medicine). See cheesy graduation photo below.
I choose to become a Nutritionist so I could help other people improve their diets, and effectively their life and how they feel about their bodies. Changing my eating habits was one of the best decisions I have ever made.
I want to support you on your journey to better health, so you can also begin to feel healthy and full of energy - the way you were designed to feel!
I hope this blog will inspire you to listen to your body and do what is best for you.
Eat yourself happy!
